About this lot
Paul Wiggers studied Graphic Design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague from 1965-1970. Since 1970 he has been working as an independent graphic designer and art director. The starting point for Paul Wiggers' paintings are old, mostly French advertising murals. His fascination with this stems from his work as a graphic designer and art director. The murals give a good idea of the (advertising) typography in the thirties, forties and fifties and partly also in the sixties. Often badly tarnished, faded or painted over with a different logo or logo. That layering and weathering are interesting and that's what the paintings are about. The enlargement and square framing ultimately create an interesting and neutral composition. Other colours are also often used or new elements are added. It's only the graphic image that counts.
The murals are the work of artists and the paintings are therefore both a tribute to old paintings and to their creators!
