About this lot
Beautiful atmospheric composition, TOP!
Han Mes studied at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. After her education, she went to Paris on a scholarship from the French state, where she developed a love for medieval art through frequent museum visits. Inspired by medieval symbolism, Han Mes developed her own visual language, which she used in small representations of figures in landscapes. From the 1970s onwards, the canvases were larger and the style was less realistic. She then uses a sober and dark palette and the accent is more on atmosphere. Later, the somber hues give way to bright colors and light. Portraits and figures in indefinable spaces form the main theme. For Han Mes, painting means processing one's own sensations and dreams, in which sometimes people play a role and sometimes not. The simplicity of pictorial forms, the careful construction of light and shadow, the colours washed by the light, the intense expressiveness and the monumental spaces are all typical features of Han Mes' work.
